hard into youtube what, do i do i don't have all the answers but, what i wanted to do is give you a little, bit of context as to what it looks like, from my perspective seeing my analytics, i posted my first short on june 17, 2021 but for the sake of this analysis, let's include the whole month of june's, performance through to the end of the, year and we'll look at only the videos i, published during that time period i put, out a total of 62 videos 18 of those, videos were shorts which represents 29, of my total output during this period, those 62 videos collectively achieved 48, million views 69 of those views were, from shorts that means 29 of my output, achieved 69 of the views from 2021. now, of my top 10 videos the top nine of, those were shorts, the 10th was a video that i posted long, form in 2018 ah, so what what, what do you do with all those numbers, when you look at them and you think does, this format fit my channel look at the, benefits that it's giving me as a, creator is this something i should, pursue and the you know the answers are, in the data if it's something that you, like and that you enjoy which i do, then yes the proof is there and i enjoy, it so why wouldn't i keep making shorts, moving into the future it's one of those, things where you can choose to ignore it, but when the company that owns the, platform that we're all so passionate, about and posting on is really pushing, hard on shorts and having their creators, make that style of content, i say make it unless it's something you, don't want to make youtube shorts good, or evil super evil, like made in a lab evil i mean for, whatever you do do not upload a youtube, short from my perspective good good, across the board i don't have a bad, thing to say about youtube shorts, honestly actually i was a little, skeptical when they rolled out but for, us shorts have been just overwhelmingly, positive for our channel first of all i, don't think youtube's quite figured it, out i think they just jumped on the boat, because they were afraid to miss it and, i think rightfully so we've known for, years that most views come from phones, and we also know that you can't watch, long-form content, while, waiting in line at the bank you're not, going to sit there turn your phone, sideways put some and just and rock out, to a 14 to 30 minute video i think that, a lot of viewers don't often know what, they want until they get it so when for, example instagram stories was coming out, and everyone was like, it's exactly like snapchat well now, everyone loves instagram stories so, maybe people you can pass please please, maybe people have to give, youtube shorts a chance i actually, uploaded my first youtube short a few, weeks ago i've been thinking about this, a lot i've been waiting i've been, sitting on this concept because i, honestly don't necessarily know how i, feel about it as a viewer as well as a, creator i have mixed feelings when it, comes to short form content on youtube, and i also have a few concerns okay so i, decided to put, shorts, on a separate youtube channel for a, couple reasons one, uh one of my like primary philosophies, is to make what i would want to watch, and a sort of bigger version of that is, to make a youtube channel that i would, want to subscribe to you know i've seen, a lot of channels sort of integrate, shorts alongside their main content, and it sort of throws me off because i'm, expecting one thing and then something, else shows up and then i get a couple, shorts and then i get a couple main, channel videos and i just want to know, exactly what to expect one thing i, really like about youtube shorts is that, it's a lower barrier to entry in terms, of us getting ideas out into the world, so if we have an idea for an episode, that generally would take us like a week, to actually make it and put it out but, with shorts we film it on our phone and, it could be out in the next two hours, and if the short does really well, sometimes we'll take that idea and turn, it into a much longer video so it's a, great way for us to test audience, interest and see which piece of content, we want to invest in there's actually, validity to, uploading, content that's filmed on the fly with, shoddy audio and not the proper lighting, and everything else uh i had a call with, pete months back and i was trying to, explain this to him and he could he's, like dude i can't get on board with, shorts like it's i just i need to film, something nice because he's ocd and, that's what makes him great but it's, also, you know a bit of a flaw when it comes, to that because he can't physically, bring himself, to, to to do anything that isn't perfect, right which is why we love him but also, you know it's uh it's what plagues him, as we were talking about this and i was, trying to convince him otherwise i made, a short during that conversation which, the next day had two million views and, he was like what so i started a separate, channel for short so people want to, subscribe for shorts they can go over, there subscribe to shorts watch them, unsubscribe if they get tired and don't, want to resubscribe whatever but you, always know when you're subscribed to, the shorts channel that you're going to, get shorts and when you're subscribed to, the main channel you know what you're, gonna get i care a lot about the viewer, experience and i care a lot about my, channel i put in a lot of work and right, now the way that youtube is and how, youtube shorts are introduced is it's, all just one big mess of content it, always came down so i didn't want to, ruin the vibe i didn't want to ruin the, aesthetic but maybe there's a way to, take what i do and take the craft and, the care and apply that to a short, maybe it's time to experiment maybe it's, time to have a little bit of fun and, maybe it is time to try something a, little more raw i can film something, funny interesting insightful educational, utilizing all the nutrients that that, content has while cutting out all the, fat now it's not always going to be that, way there's obviously things that need, to be long formed this video is perfect, for a long form not good so the fact that i can make a, quality video and still make it sub 60, seconds and get across all the points, that i want to get across, that is enticing to me and it broadens, the spectrum of what i'm able to create, what i'm able to shoot if i want to just, talk about this truck for 60 seconds i, can do that on top of creating more, long-form videos that week i'm able to, pump out more better and faster and, broaden my interests within my video, creation we used to only upload one, video a week to youtube but now with, shorts we have one long video and three, short videos so that's four, opportunities a week for us to reach an, audience and gain subscribers our most, watched short has gained us 20 000, subscribers so overall this is just, giving us an increase in exposure on the, platform and that's just generally, positive for our channel we have more, subscribers more viewership and we're, making more revenue on the channel as a, result not directly from the shorts, creator fund but just the channel as a, whole is just getting lifted up by the, increase in viewership and this is part, of a bigger, philosophy of like siloed thoughts, there's always a question of do i start, a separate channel for the car videos i, want to make do i start a separate, channel for, the q a videos there's there's a certain, level of, siloing things that is acceptable, and i think i've managed to put a lot of, different variety and stuff on the main, channel but for shorts it's so different, that i decided it needed its own silo so, that's why there's a short channel if, youtube would, basically create a separate category for, shorts and a separate category for video, so that viewers or subscribers could, just easily navigate through either of, those types of content i think that, would take away a lot of the concerns, that both the creators have as well as, the subscribers have creating a separate, channel for shorts might be a good idea, i've even you know asked youtube like, why don't you guys create like a sub, channel like your main channel is this, and then you got like a little shorts, channel a little gaming channel or, whatever it is so they can all kind of, live and help each other, instead of harm each other but i think, they're just still trying to figure it, out as am i and i think you should too i, don't think you should miss out on this, so i think it would behoove youtube to, make their shorts feed a separate feed, right like a separate product so like, instagram has, reels and it has igtv and it has the, feed so why would youtube put shorts, in with all the other youtube videos i, think that's what makes people mad and, that's what makes people angry at least, that's what makes me angry as a viewer, of youtube shorts because when i see, them in the regular feed i expect a long, video and all of a sudden it's like this, little short snippet it costs me and i'm, like, i don't want that so those are my, thoughts on youtube shorts, yeah now pete you sent us this comment, that someone said that they didn't come, to your channel to watch shorts, from our perspective right now what, we're seeing is that the majority of the, views that are coming in on our shorts, are from the short's feet so that means, people are intentionally opening up the, shorts feed and wanting to watch shorts, also if the shorts you're putting out, offer the same value as the long videos, like if you're teaching people about, photography and things like that what's, the big deal like why would you start a, second channel to do the same thing i, definitely think that should all be in, one place if it's hitting the same value, prop for the same audience it should all, live in the same place something that, i've been hearing a lot and i've been, reading a lot is that this is the, perfect way to build your community well, maybe not the perfect way but this is a, great opportunity to build a community, and i have to agree, because i think that now yes you can put, your video in front of millions of, people who have never heard of you have, never seen your content so in that, regard yes totally however i have to be, a little bit skeptical and i have to, think is the level of engagement the, same as someone who's watching your, regular type of videos because when i, look at myself and when i consume short, form content i can definitely say that, i'm just mindlessly watching i'm not, invested in the content i'm just looking, for that next adrenaline hit right and, the reality is we're moving in a, direction where there can be a 20 minute, long video and there can be multiple 15, 20 30 second long videos that all cover, the same topic in the same place there's, a long video that we made on our channel, that has 150 000 views we then released, a short with very similar information, that short has closer to 3 million views, so my questions are basically is a level, of engagement the same and are those, short subscribers equal to the regular, subscribers are they going to be as, heavily invested as the regular, subscribers are right now i think if, you're a channel that's trying to grow, shorts is a great way to do that i think, it's a great way to express yourself and, make different content diversify and, also grow at the same time there are, people growing faster than my channel, ever did already surpass the subscribers, that i have in less than a year just, from making shorts it's a great tool, that broadens your horizon that will, help you grow why wouldn't i want to, take advantage of that no that's my, opinion on shorts i i think they're sick, i think if you got a good idea and you, want to just bang something off, boom off you go, thank you so much to everyone that, helped me make
