i am excited about youtube shorts again, because it sounds like they are finally, about to fix the algorithm howdy howdy, everyone nate here let me tell you what, i mean to explain i need to take you, back to the beginning of youtube shorts, through nate's eyes here you see it was, a brand new thing and not a lot of, people knew about it but word was, spreading fast kind of grassroots style, it was about that time that i started, testing it and having great success with, it therefore i went on and i made my, initial video saying youtube shorts is, huge and you need to get on it right now, because at the beginning with youtube, shorts they were essentially handing out, views to people the early adopters of, this new betta youtube shorts thing, almost anyone could produce a youtube, short publish it on their channel no, matter what it was about or what their, channel was about or how big their, channel was and it would get thousands, of views while that was a good thing, that caused a lot of channel makers who, maybe had never done short form content, to suddenly rise to the ranks of youtube, shorts very quickly what happened for, most channel makers was they saw a rapid, decline in their views as the, competition ramped up and more and more, people became aware of it but during, this time i started to see a concerning, thing happening where channel makers, would publish youtube shorts in their, primary content with the hopes of, tapping into that broader appeal, audience and leading them to their, long-form content however i started to, see that that was not the case and in, many cases youtube shorts were actually, damaging the views or the viewership on, the long-form content on the channel and, this was happening to channels that had, been publishing on youtube for years so, it's because of this observance that i, started to recommend to people like, yourself that they create separate, youtube channels one for your long form, and one for your youtube shorts and for, many channels that has been very, successful and will continue to be, successful however all along the way i, just wished there was a way to combine, them in a good way on the same channel, with the benefit of the broad appeal of, youtube shorts without the detriment of, causing your regular viewers to go down, and it was also at about this point that, the youtube creator liaison matt koval, reached out to me and asked for my take, on how youtube shorts were doing and i, shared some concerns with him as well as, several examples of what i was observing, happening on youtube now unfortunately i, didn't hear much from him after that, directly and that is where i stood for, several months which is why i avoided in, most cases publishing videos on this, channel about youtube shorts but now, that brings us to today or as a, recording a few weeks ago vidcon during, vidcon there was a presentation by jimmy, donaldson aka mr beast as well as todd, buprey well hopefully todd if you're, watching this i pronounce your name, right but for you watching this this was, significant to me because yeah sure, jimmy is great but todd is in charge of, the discovery algorithm on youtube so, everything about the youtube algorithm, and how your videos get found that's up, to him and his team but what todd said, was extremely validating to what i was, observing you see todd described in, essence that at the beginning of youtube, shorts it was the wild west there were, handing out views exactly what i was, seeing then what they didn't realize was, that youtube shorts if they were, produced on the same channel as long, form content the algorithm thought that, the audience preferred shorter form, content therefore they stopped, recommending longer form content for, that same audience hence what i was, describing of the drop-off or the, detrimental views on long-form content, then what youtube did when they saw that, happening was they decided to completely, cut them and separate youtube shorts, analytics from the rest of analytics, hence what i was seeing very little, crossover between the two content types, but then what todd said next was that, they are finally at the point where, they're starting to bridge the gap, between youtube shorts and long form, content on the same channel again so why, am i so excited why is nate so excited, now because hopefully now channel makers, like yourself can leverage the spread of, youtube shorts combined with the, benefits and monetary benefits of, long-form content you've got to, understand why this is so significant, for me youtube shorts have been wildly, successful for a lot of creators thus, far but they have not been very, lucrative and by lucrative i don't just, mean money i mean a million views on in, youtube shorts still means dramatically, less than a million views on a long form, video okay now i've said all of that are, there issues that i perceive thus far, yes very much so it's still in, development and it's still the wild west, so to speak it's also still not going to, be an easy walk for channel makers as, they learn the ins and outs both of, creating short form content as well as, as the algorithm continues to be, developed and youtube the company is, attempting to tout the benefits of short, form content on long form including a, recent video on the youtube creators, channel where they were trying to tout, the ability of this channel dylan lemay, to create short film content that, actually feeds into longer form content, now this example was fairly weak if, we're honest i wasn't the only one, thinking this if you look at the, comments on this video a lot of them, reflect that same sentiment you see, youtube hasn't proven yet how to, effectively convert shorts viewers into, long-form viewers my guess here is that, it's going to be a bit more tricky than, youtube is making it sound to convert, short form viewers into long-form, content consumers but i will be keeping, an eye on that playing field go ahead, and let me know in the comments if you, want to hear more of my thoughts on that, as it develops but here we get to the, big question what does nate recommend, now first of all nate recommends that, you boop the like button on this video, if it has been helpful to you so that it, can spread to more people and be helpful, to other people i appreciate it thank, you but in order to fully answer this, question what do i recommend now i'm, starting to ask myself some questions, the first one is what does youtube want, with shorts it's been no secret that, they're looking to compete with the, likes of tick tock and instagram reels, and other short form vertical video but, when i look at it from a business, perspective i gotta bet it's not just, about owning that market share and, hopefully creating some money out of it, i've gotta bet that one of the biggest, things they're trying to crack right now, is monetization for youtube shorts in, fact as i record this a recent article, from social media today talks about how, youtube shorts are now up to 30 billion, daily views and ads in shorts are being, tested but what i'm seeing is this being, a tricky thing to unlock because my take, here is that the first platform to, unlock solid consistent monetization for, short form content might just be the, winner here and what i'm referring to, when i say consistent is i'm talking, similar to the youtube partner program, where a certain number of views, translates into a certain amount of, income not just the youtube shorts, creator fun which many people are, finding to be extremely inconsistent and, not make them very much money at all so, back to this question of what does, youtube even want out of youtube shorts, aside from capturing the market share, they want to make money with it so i'm, sure they're hard at work developing it, which we're seeing some testing already, happening but also they want to garner, the attention of new audience as well as, create a satisfying experience for, short's viewers and whatever, monetization method they choose for that, needs to translate into that experience, which brings me to the next question, what do you want out of youtube shorts, and how does it match up with what, youtube wants you see there's two, primary things that i see being, beneficial for you and i as channel, makers from youtube shorts the one is to, make money and the second is to get, attention or growth for the rest of the, content on our channels now as far as, what that's going to look like well the, playing field is still being built right, now as we speak which brings me to the, big recommendation i'm gonna make here, right now might be a good time to get, back into the shorts game on your, content or if you've already been doing, it to double down on what you're, currently doing because it's looking to, me here that youtube shorts are poised, to become a much greater contender and a, much more valuable resource for you and, i as channel makers because if they get, monetization figured out and they figure, out the algorithm of bridging the gap, between long form and short form content, on the same channel it will be a game, changer because what i'm seeing here is, to be successful with youtube shorts, especially combined with long-form, content they need to fit into your, overall strategy so i'm going to, recommend this video for you to watch, next it doesn't directly mention youtube, shorts but it does talk about a solid, strategy
