so in today's software development world, i feel that there is kind of a problem, there's like a problem with how soft the, developers approach writing their code, there is this tendency this sort of, recommendation to never reinvent the, wheel, right like if you have a project or, you're working on something and you need, to get a feature done, if there is somebody else out there with, like a library or some piece of code, that gets that done for you, it's often recommended that you use that, piece of code instead, and i mean don't get me wrong i'm not, saying that's bad that's actually a, pretty good strategy, in many different situations but the, problem is that soft to developers they, don't do just that, they have like this tendency to take, things a little bit too far, and what i mean by that is if you look, at software developers they're always, trying to write as little, code as possible right like programmers, trying to write, as little quote as possible just think, about that for a second and they're also, trying to abstract away as much of the, code as they can to some other, third-party library or to some other, piece of code that they found online, if they could they would abstract away, the entire project, and not write a single line of code, themselves and i personally think, that in and of itself is very bad and, that's what i want to talk about, in this video, all right so look how many times as a, junior developer have you been faced, with building a feature, building something in a company that, you're working for and some other senior, developer comes and tells you that hey, you should try to look if there's a, third-party library that does what, you're trying to do, and if there is implement that instead, because it's going to be easier it's, going to save time, it's going to save the effort of, maintaining that piece of code, and overall it's going to be a good, decision for the company and you, as a junior developer you're of course, going to listen to that advice because i, mean that guy's a senior he has more, experience he probably knows what he's, talking about, and you start adopting and looking for, this third party library to implement in, your code, now if you do that a couple of times at, some point you're gonna start to form a, habit, out of it and your default sort of, reaction to when you're having to build, a new feature, is going to be to go online to look for, a third-party library and that can, become a problem if there are things, that, you really should be building yourself, instead of looking for somebody else's, code, and i mean using this library just like, anything else in software development, and really anything else in life, there's going to be some pros and cons, right like there's a trade-off that you, have to make, on one hand you're getting a lot of, speed because you don't have to write, the chord yourself you're getting a lot, of ease of use because it's already, built for you you just literally plug, and play it, and you're also getting the ease in the, future right you don't have to maintain, that piece of code but on the other side, you're also losing some things for, example you're exposing yourself, in the project to any security, vulnerability that that third library, may be exposed to, because it's not your code right you, can't really know that it's doing what, it's supposed to do, you can't really test it yourself you, have to trust the person that made the, code and make sure that they tested it, and that it works correctly, and if you look on mine that's like a, very real risk right the moment you put, somebody else's code in your project, you become vulnerable to all of the, vulnerabilities that that code has, and usually if you keep up this tendency, of like always going to a third-party, library to get anything done, you're going to end up with a lot of, code that is not written by you, and that's a lot of code that you don't, control also at the same time, and this like really differs on the, context but if you're using these, third-party libraries to build, the features you're not really learning, anything new you're not training, yourself to like, come up with solutions to problems, you're training yourself to always find, the solution elsewhere, and if you're in a situation where the, solution doesn't exist out there, you're not gonna really know what to do, right like i don't think people really, think about this when they say don't, reinvent the wheel, like yes it's good of course in some, situations get somebody else's code, but if you push this too far like we're, always gonna be reusing somebody else's, code and we're always going to depend, that somebody else's code exists to get, the thing that we want done, and like i said if there isn't we're all, going to be in big trouble and if we, then try because we have no other choice, to build the future ourselves, we're not really going to be that good, at it because we have no experience, because we're never really trying to do, this, on the long term now these are like sort, of individual problems, problems that you would get maybe you as, an individual as a software developer, but there's also problems on a larger, scale for example the innovation of the, industry the innovation of software, developers, the only reason why we have now all of, these languages that are, like very high level super abstracted, from the actual machine code, is because people took the time to write, the thing themselves people took the, time to, invent the wheel if you will right like, in the beginning of software development, things were a lot harder things took a, lot longer it was very difficult to get, the same things that we cannot get done, like we have to really appreciate how, far we've come as an industry right, right now we can just spin a python we, can just spin up javascript, and things for the most part just work, without us having to interact with any, of like the machine code, and any of the things that the computer, talks with directly and that would never, have happened had we not had people, who took it upon themselves to invent, the wheel to deploy the effort that it, took, to write the things themselves to build, the libraries to build the languages to, abstract a lot of the code out there, so that we can have an easier time to do, what we currently do, and if you then push a sort of mentality, of not writing the code yourself of, always trying to look for somebody else, that has written it for you, you're not really paving the way for, innovation anymore you're paving the way, for people to just expect that things, will be done, and at some point things will just not, be done anymore because there's nobody, else that's actively working, on making our lives easier now before, you say something, let's be clear there are some things in, some situations where it definitely, makes sense, to use somebody else's code because, writing it yourself just doesn't make, sense and could lead to some potential, very bad outcomes for example, authentication, right if you have like an application, that you need to authenticate users you, need to store their data to store the, usernames their emails their passwords, you really want to use some other, library that has already done that, for you because the risk is very great, when you're dealing with authentication, right like you have people's information, you have their emails you have their, passwords you have things that are very, dear to them, and if you were to make a mistake which, is very likely when you're writing the, thing yourself right that's part of, software development, you don't want to expose that, information at such a high risk, so in that situation it does make sense, to use authentication built by somebody, else the same goes for payments you, don't want to handle payments yourself, because, on top of authentication payments have, very big regulations that differ from, country to country and government to, government, and now you're dealing with people's, payment information with credit cards, real money and if that gets stolen or, that gets leaked, then you are gonna face not only some, public consequences and backlash but, also some legal ones, so right like it does depend on the, context i'm not saying that you should, never use somebody else's code i'm, saying that we should never, always try to use somebody else's code, and when it does make sense for you to, try to write it yourself because you're, going to benefit a lot as a software, developer, and the industry in general is also, going to benefit a lot, right like how many times have you had, to build a feature that seemed super, complex and you just happened to find, somebody else that built the same, feature, and offered it in a third-party library, and you were super thankful for them, because it saved you the effort to write, the code yourself, well you should think about doing those, things too back for the community you, should think about whatever, things that doesn't currently exist in, the system out there you should make it, yourself, write the code for it and build it into, like a package, and put it online for other people to, use rightly give back to the community, because when it comes down to it that's, really the point of software development, that's the point of our community, is to always give back and help each, other i mean if you look a lot of the, things are open source, they're open source exactly for that, reason you want to give the code, for free to people to help them and in, return, it would be really nice if they did the, same because it betters the community as, a whole and then we all collectively get, better at soft developers, just like we've gotten a lot better in, these past decades based on the work, that people have done, for this very same community so yeah, just like think twice before trying to, implement some third-party library, instead of building it yourself think, about the fact is it really worth it, what am i gaining from this what am i, losing, especially in the fact that if it's like, a personal project of yours that it's, just you working on it to like learn and, become better as a developer, then you should definitely write the, code yourself even if it does make sense, to use somebody else's code because, you'll get a lot out of it personally, you'll learn to become a much better, developer, otherwise when it does make sense to use, an external library then by all means, go ahead and use it right it always, depends on the context, so that was the video for this week guys, thank you so much for watching if you, enjoyed
